Through to the next round: Sixth-form student Josh, 16, sang My Girl by The Temptations, sending the teenage girls in the audience wild

He made a modest entrance on stage and said he though he had an 'all right chance' of winning the contest.

But with his boyish good looks and dulcet tones, 16-year-old student Josh Barry proved a sure-fire hit on Britain's Got Talent last night.

The sixth-form student told judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan of his dreams to be a professional singer.

He then left the girls in the audience screaming after singing a rousing rendition of My Girl by The Temptations.

Josh, who auditioned in London, was then given three thumbs up from the judges, with not one of them pressing their buzzers during his rendition, and made it through to the next round.

Before he performed, he said: 'Today’s audition is the biggest thing that’s ever happened to me.

You're through: The teenager shakes the hands of the three judges, seen here with Piers Morgan

'It’s quite nerve wracking, I’m nervous that Simon is going to say something really bad.’

Amanda was equally impressed, telling him: 'You were confident, you were a showman and you delivered. I think you’ve got the potential to be a great pop star.'

Piers adds: 'You’ve got the looks, you’ve got the charm, you’ve got the stage presence, you’ve got the girls going crazy. I think that was a brilliant performance.'

Simon added: 'You’ve got a lot of things going your way – you’re a good looking guy, you’ve got charisma, and people like you.

Horny: Simon Cowell tries his best devil impression, while Amanda Holden gets in the spirit with her bunny ears

'If I met you under normal circumstances I would say to you ‘Josh you should be in a band.'

Viewers last night saw Cowell go from Simon to Satan during the show after being handed the devil horns by one of the contestants.

Fellow judges got in on the act after wannabe Marlene, from Bournemouth, handed Amanda Holden some bunny ears and Piers Morgan a fluffy bow tie as a gift.

The great-grandmother, 62, made sure there were presents all round as she gave presenters Ant and Dec some comedy specs.

Using their heads: Piers Morgan, left, Amanda and Simon listen to Marlene's rendition of Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell

Singer Marlene - who has eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter - performed her version of Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now as she appeared at the Cardiff audition.

And she felt age was no barrier to trying her hand at stardom. 'There's no age limit on dreams. My ultimate dream is I'd love to perform on the Royal Variety Performance," she said.

Holden shared a joke with her horned colleague, asking him: 'How much do you want for my soul?'

Joker: Paul impressed judges with his impression of Harry Hill
Quick as a flash, Cowell shot back: 'I already have your soul.'

But her sense of humour was not enough to get her through as the former sewing machinist got buzzed off midway through her performance of Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell.

Other acts of note last night included dance act Twist and Pulse, who impressed with a routine perfected in their kitchen that saw them bust a move to the Cheeky Girls and the EastEnders theme.

Double act: Twist and Pulse, aka best friends Ashley and Glen, show off their moves and get three yes votes

Holden told them: 'I think you just showed us a glimpse of the future.'
The double act were put through with three yes votes.

Devilish Cowell put another street dance act Ice on the spot by suggesting they sack their choreographers after the Rotherham troupe performed for the judges.

But he relented and told them they had gone through to the next round.

Tough decisions: Simon Cowell asks dance group Ice if they would be prepared to fire their choreographers

Moving on up: The group, aged between 12 and 18, danced to a mash-up of hits including Black Eyed Peas I've Gotta Feeling and were voted through
